Summary of Maul from this issue
How Maul is referred to
-
Sith Lord
What we learn about Maul in this comic is that he is:
-
a Sith Lord
-
a master duelist with the lightsaber
-
willing to fight two Jedi at the same time
-
well trained in the Jedi Arts
-
ruthless
-
a strategist
-
able to change strategy mid-battle
-
able to kill a Jedi Master who is a master lightsaber duelist
-
able to quickly change tactics during combat
-
able to use his opponent's anger against them (a dark side ability)
-
able to defeat his Jedi opponent in lightsaber and martial combat
-
able to use force throw
-
able to lose focus, a battle (and his legs), because of his hubris, which is a Zabrak characteristic, which is discussed on another page of this site.
panel ob 1
The first we learn of Maul is when Anakin tells Obi-Wan that Qui-Gon is in trouble. Obi-Wan looks out the window and says, "It was the Sith Lord."
I'm not sure how he knew it was the Sith Lord or a Sith Lord at all, but at this point this is what we learn of the then unnamed Maul:
-
he is a Sith Lord.
Obi-Wan then says, "Gui-Gon was a master with the lightsaber and barely bested him." It seems that besting the Sith means that the Jedi was able to escape. As we learn that Jinn is a lightsaber master, we also learn that the mysterious dark stranger is:
-
a master duelist with the lightsaber.
panel ob 2
The Jedi leave Tatooine and go straight to the Jedi Council on Coruscant. Here, Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn informs the Council about his mysterious attacker. Master Jedi and Jedi Council member Mace Windu informs Jinn and his padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi, to "[G]o with the Queen to Naboo and discover the identity of this dark warrior. This is the clue we need to unravel the mystery of the Sith."
We learn little here other than:
-
the Sith's presence is a mystery, and
-
the Jedi Council confirms that the stranger is a Sith.
panel set ob 3
Obi-Wan says that the "Sith Lord was waiting for us," and that "Master Qui-Gon was right, the Sith was well trained in the Jedi Arts."
What we learn here is that the Sith Lord was:
-
again referred to as a Sith Lord
-
willing to fight both Jedi at the same time
-
was well trained in the Jedi Arts

panel set ob 4
Kenobi says they can beat the Sith and that the Sith Lord knew it. Maul then divides them.
We learn that Maul was:
-
ruthless,
-
a strategist, and
-
capable of changing strategy mid-battle.
We also learn that:
-
Kenobi thinks he and Jinn together can defeat the Sith.

panel ob 5
The Sith warrior kills Jinn with his lightsaber. We learn that Maul is:
-
capable of killing a Jedi Master.

panel set ob 6
Obi-Wan unwittingly opens himself to the Dark Side by allowing his anger to guide him. He cuts Darth Maul's double bladed lightsaber in half, leaving the Sith without

a weapon. At first, Maul is thrown off balance by Kenobi's anger, but he quickly adjusts for it. Sith are able to use their opponent's emotion against them and draw on their anger, hatred, and fear, which Maul does. Obi-Wan says, "...and he used it [Kenobi's anger] against me."
Maul bests him in combat and then uses the force to push Kenobi down the power generator shaft, which causes the padawan to drop his lightsaber. Here we learn that Maul:
-
can quickly change tactics during combat,
-
use his opponent's anger against them,
-
defeat his Jedi opponent in lightsaber and martial combat, and
-
use the force to throw his enemy down a shaft.
panel set ob 7
In this set of panels, we see the Sith kick the Jedi's lightsaber down the generator shaft. Here, unlike in the movie, we don't see Maul or his gloating. What we do see is Maul standing over a Jedi in peril yet not killing him. We see that he does not react in time to keep Kenobi from summoning his master's lightsaber and then cutting him down. We'll discuss later that one Zabrak characteristic is a sense of superiority over other species, which is what we see illustrated here. Lord Maul's hubris gave him a false sense of finality to the battle, leading to inattentiveness, which lead to his downfall at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi, soon to be Jedi Knight.
Here we learn that Maul is:
-
able to lose focus and a battle (and his legs) because of his inattentive Zabrak hubris.
